Hola! Neighbor…Greet your community online…

Hola Neighbor

I think this is a pretty good way to become more “neighborly” in the world today. Late last month, an group of people got together to form DCStartupWeekend and as a result of their collaborative effort, they decided to unveil the latest in social networking…they created HolaNeighbor.com as a means of forming a better community. I think it’s a pretty good idea and who knows how far it’ll go. According to their website, you can find people in your community with specific interests, maybe even perhaps your next door neighbor! In fact, they are quoted as saying:“Be a part of your community, help plan events, share important information, and meet the person next door.”

Now before you go off and say that it’s like Facebook or Myspace (or even *shudder* Friendster), you should know that this really is probably more of a niche market. Albeit it’s still growing, but I think the target of it isn’t to see how many friends you have on your profile page, but to truly network with people in your neighborhood – whether it’s Adams Morgan, Georgetown, Capital Heights, U Street, etc. So if you want more of a tight-knit community compared to a traditional group that you would find in Myspace and Facebook – those just seem so impersonal at times…

So be sure to sign up today and meet your next door neighbor…the site is still in its infancy so you’ll be able to get in on the ground floor and be a part of something really cool.

UPDATE (11/05/2007): HolaNeighbor.com is featured on WashingtonPost.com in story “Building a Community, Byte by Byte.
